Where does pollen come from?

what will become the fruit

Where does pollen come from?
Pollen comes from plants. It is used to pollinate so the plants will produce fruit or flowers. Animals do no have pollen. They do have dander
Reply:pollen comes from trees and animals
Reply:Pollen is produced at the tip of a filament, generally in an oblong structure called the anther in flowers.

My son has allergies to dust, dander, pollen. Can anyone tell me if air purifiers work, and if so whats best?

Air purifier helps reduce the symptoms but will not get rid of the problem.

I suggest IQAir HealthPro (around $700). It's one of the best air purifer.

A cheaper solution is Alen A350 ($400). An Austin air purifier is also a good solution.

Avoid ionic air purifiers because they are hazardous. And remember to ask about the replcacement filter costs since cheaper air purifiers are mostly expensive in the long run.

My son has allergies to dust, dander, pollen. Can anyone tell me if air purifiers work, and if so whats best?
Allergies are difficult. The kids are always sniffling etc. I would definately check with your doctor first to see if there is any medication that can be given to your son before you rack up your electric bill. The doctor may even prescribe allergy shots which are definately worth it in the long run. Air purifiers are ok, except they really don't get rid of the stuff that is causing the problem. They get rid of the most prominent molocules of air that are toxic, or have dirt in them. They also really do rack up your energy bill, sort of like running an AC. IF you have central heat/air, I would suggest buying a filter that is hypo allergenic. It really helps. Also, vacuum once every day, and dust twice a week. It will also tune down the sneezing volume in the house. If you have any pets such as a cat, rabbit, dog, or ferrit I would remove them from the house. If the child dosen't want to get rid of the pets then put him on meds.
Reply:The Ionic Breese Quadra works its best.

Its only 68$ at your local Home Depot.
Reply:Anything that can remove the allergens from the air can be a help. There are many out there. Go get a consumer reports magazine and compare prices and performance.
Reply:Ionic Breeze Air Purifiers work incredibly well. I love them. I've purchased about 9 of them, (on Ebay, cheap), and I've even given them away as gifts. Make sure you get the real deal. Those Home Depot things are crap. I've found that I sleep better with my IB next to the bed. They remove all kinds of crud from the air and wash off easily. Absolutely no sound.

I live in Austin,TX and the mold and cedar pollen are high does anyone know if it can make you tired .?

Since I have moved here which has been about 10months I have been exhausted and wasn't sure if it could be something in the air (allergies, pollen, mold cedar trees)

I live in Austin,TX and the mold and cedar pollen are high does anyone know if it can make you tired .?
When your body reacts to allergens it produces it's own antihistamines which cause your mucous membranes to swell and excrete mucous so no more of the allergen can enter, itchy eyes, and most often, fatigue. Just like if you were to take diphenhydramine(Benadryl), you are going to get sleepy. Your body's metabolism wants to slow down so less of the allergens get into your system. Zyrtec is awesome, and now over the counter. Be sure to ask your doctor, and or the pharmacist first, in case any other meds you may be taking might interact negatively, or you have any other pre-existing conditions where you can't take antihistamines. Remember that as far as the pollen count goes, it's highest in the morning and late afternoon/evening. Close your windows, car ones included, use recirculating in your car, and try to stay indoors during those hours. Oh yeah, the generic for Zyrtec is cetirizine, and works just as well.
Reply:It can. If you have any other symtomes then try to take some benadrill. It's just a symtome of a small allergic reaction.

Hope this helped

Why can't genetic engineers make poppy pollen so that no more opium is made, when they're able to change other

characteristics of other crop plants? Then they could just spread this genetically altered pollen in Pakistan and Afghanistan and that'd be the end of terrorists' funding via the opium trade??

Why can't genetic engineers make poppy pollen so that no more opium is made, when they're able to change other
Assume that they can. Then how do you ensure that the genetically engineered pollen is the one that fetilize the existing flowers? Poppies are fetilized by bees, so the pollen of one flower is the one getting on the back of a bee that will get brushed into another flower. Airdropping pollen would do nothing unless you put so much that it has the concentration that the natural pollen has on the flower's stamen.

The plants that are genetically engineered are done in a lab, in a closely isolated area. And it is only after the plant is ready that seeds are released. It is not done with pollen, it is done with seeds. And evidently, those interested in the new plant get those seeds deliberately.
Reply:Well I think it would have to be America or other countries that have the knowhow to do that. Can you imagine what would happen if we started flying over those countries, dropping stuff from planes? Theoretically , a great idea, just not practical in my opinion.

Do the Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier needs a pollen filter?

Generally speaking all cars with air conditioning have what is called a cabin air filter and they will not filter pollen by a long shot. Maybe an aftermarket company make something better but I've never seen them. I'd be the first to buy one as I'm very allergic to grass and trees.

When pollen meets the egg cells of a plant what does it produce?

"When pollen meets the egg cells of a plant," seeds are produced.

After the pollen lands on the stigma of the plant, pollen tubes start to grow. These pollen tubes grow down the style of the plant until they reach the ovary. The "male gamete from the pollen tube joins the egg from the ovary," and a seed is formed.

What is the purpose of the pollen tube that forms after pollination?

Pollination is the placement of the pollen on the stigma of the carpal. This pollen transfer can be accomplished by wind, insects, built in mechanical discharge, and man. Once the pollen lands on the stigma, a series of chemical reactions takes place allowing the pollen grain to begin producing a structure called the pollen tube. As this is happening, the generative nucleus will divide and produce 2 sperm nuclei. This pollen grain with the pollen tube and 3 nuclei is considered the mature gametophyte. The pollen tube will work its way through the style of the carpal and touch the micropyle of the ovule. Here the sperm nuclei will enter the embryo sac and fertilize the egg and the two polar nuclei; hence the term double fertilization. The fertilized egg (2N) will develop into the immature seed plant, while the (3N) central cell will develop into the endosperm or food storage area of the seed.

What is the purpose of the pollen tube that forms after pollination?
formation of a channel for the pollen to travel through the plant tissues to the egg. otherwise, they would just be 2 ships sitting around in the night.

Can severe allergies (pollen) and congestion cause fatigue?

I am so tired lated. More than usual. And It seems to correspond to spring and all the pollen, hayfever allergies and resulting congestion. I do take benadryl from time to time when I just can't take the itchy throat, eyes and runny nose no longer. But I just feel drained now that spring has hit. Could this be related to the allergies? Thanks!

Can severe allergies (pollen) and congestion cause fatigue?
Your body is reacting to an allergen, you will be fatigue, just as if it was fighting any other foreign antigen in your body. Rest, drink lots of water and take antihistamines, it will help you. Decongestion can help w/ your congestion as well. Good luck
Reply:yes, absolutely!! i suffer from severe allergies and it always drains me. it can also affect your sleep whether you realize or not and that can cause fatigue. i'm not a doctor or a nurse, but this is what my doctor told me!!
Reply:Absolutely. It is no wonder it is called "spring fever." Depending on what part of the country you live, allergies are rampant right now.

I use "Simply Saline" to ease mine and take a Benadryl at night. You may do well with some other types of treatment that can be obtained from your physician. Clartin also works well. You can buy this in generic form/(ask your pharmacist).
Reply:Yes, any time your body is fighting allergies or an infection it is using extra energy so you will feel more fatigue than usual.
Reply:Yes, as your immune system's resources are expended and your body becomes weaker. Also, if your allergy produces respiratory-cardiovasculatory complications you may be having less ability to absorb oxygen

What state has the lowest pollen count year round? Am currently in TX & allergies are so bad I may move?

Hope it helps!

What state has the lowest pollen count year round? Am currently in TX %26amp; allergies are so bad I may move?
when I lived in Northern California right on the Coast in Ferndale I never had a problem. I guess because the ocean blew all the pollen inland, Usualy a terrible hayfever person
Reply:I assumed that Nevada would have a low all-around allergen count, but boy was I wrong. Vegas is ranked #16 out of 100 in the top 100 worst cities for allergies in the US.

In all actuality, moving from one place to another is not an effective solution for allergies, because you'll develop allergies to the prevalent allergens wherever you go. In Oklahoma, it was mold from the constant humidity, then I come to Nevada and it's the dust. Any place with grass, trees, or weeds is going to have pollen, which is usually lowest in the winter and worst in the spring, summer, or fall depending on the type.

The best way to decrease allergies is to take allergy medications like antihistamines, decongestants and others. You could also try allergy shots, acupuncture, or homeopathic remedies. Having a food allergy test done can pinpoint your food sensitivities/allergies, and by decreasing your intake of these allergens, you'll lessen your overall symptoms of allergy. It's like a bucket that gets fuller with each exposure: with just pollen, you may be okay. Add animal dander and you'll start to sneeze. Add a food allergen and you'll be in the throes of a full-blown allergy attack. The bucket has just overflowed.

Keeping your home free of dust, mold, and animal dander can help as well, and the bedroom is the most important room to keep clean. Wash bedding once a week and hair daily during pollen season. Use the air conditioner in the car and keep the windows rolled up. Avoid being outdoors in the early morning hours, as that's when most things release pollen. Change filters on air cleaners and air conditioners frequently and vacuum often. Take a good multi-vitamin plus extra vitamin C during allergy season to keep the immune system running at peak efficiency.

It's a full-time job trying to avoid allergens, but to date, these are the best methods we have for making our lives allergy-friendly.
Reply:If I had to guess, I'd say your best bet is probably a desert state like Arizona or Nevada. My wife has allergies so I know what you are going through.
Reply:probably either new mexico or arizona.
Reply:any state that can grow dank
Reply:DON'T move, take a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day and you will have NO air born allergies within a month or so. Your body will develop immunities-naturally- as you ingest the local honey. You will also notice that you are overall healthier and you don't catch every little germ that floats your way. This really works and its good for you unlike medications that dry out your body causing complications due to dehydration.

Does anyone have any info on tree pollen allergy-induced migraines in children?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pollen analysis?

what are the advantages and disadvantages for the use of pollen anaylsis to reconstruct paleoecological environments

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pollen analysis?
Biological evidence is an important tool for reconstructing past climates and environments. One of the most widely used and successful techniques is that of pollen analysis. It is used to reconstruct the vegetation in the past. Paleoecological reconstruction also uses information provided in the extraction, recording and analysis of the fossil record. This provides us with a time framework and an idea of the flora and fauna during a certain epoch. The problem of fossils for dating and reconstructing past environments is that it is not useful for the last ten to hundred thousand years

How do bees turn pollen into honey?

Honeybees use nectar to make honey. Nectar is almost 80% water with some complex sugars. In fact, if you have ever pulled a honeysuckle blossom out of its stem, nectar is the clear liquid that drops from the end of the blossom. In North America, bees get nectar from flowers like clovers, dandelions, berry bushes and fruit tree blossoms. They use their long, tubelike tongues like straws to suck the nectar out of the flowers and they store it in their "honey stomachs". Bees actually have two stomachs, their honey stomach which they use like a nectar backpack and their regular stomach. The honey stomach holds almost 70 mg of nectar and when full, it weighs almost as much as the bee does. Honeybees must visit between 100 and 1500 flowers in order to fill their honeystomachs.

The honeybees return to the hive and pass the nectar onto other worker bees. These bees suck the nectar from the honeybee's stomach through their mouths. These "house bees" "chew" the nectar for about half an hour. During this time, enzymes are breaking the complex sugars in the nectar into simple sugars so that it is both more digestible for the bees and less likely to be attacked by bacteria while it is stored within the hive. The bees then spread the nectar throughout the honeycombs where water evaporates from it, making it a thicker syrup. The bees make the nectar dry even faster by fanning it with their wings. Once the honey is gooey enough, the bees seal off the cell of the honeycomb with a plug of wax. The honey is stored until it is eaten. In one year, a colony of bees eats between 120 and 200 pounds of honey.

They turn nectar from flowers into honey by partially digesting it, then regurgitating it.

The pollen-carrying thing is accidental.
Reply:pollen is bee currency and they go down the local bee co-op and exchange it for honey
Reply:I believe they digest it, and then regurgitate it back up. Seriously—honey is bee vomit.
Reply:Honeybees use nectar to produce honey. Nectar is a clear liquid that is found in flowers - it is made up mainly of water and the rest is sugar. They suck the nectar out of the flowers and store it in a their honey stomach (bees actually have 2 stomachs).

The bees then return to the hive and pass the nectar onto worker bees. The worker bees chew the nectar for about half an hour allowing enzymes to break down the complex sugars. They then spread the nectar over the honeycomb where it evapourates and becomes thicker and is called honey!
Reply:The bees make honey from nectar (sugar solution) not pollen. The flowers generate the nectar to attract bees to them, pollen gets attached to the bee when it is collecting nectar and then it delivers the pollen to another flower. This is how floers reproduce.

This is info on honey I found by a google search.

Honey is a sweet, thick sugary solution made by bees. The composition of honey consists of varying proportions of fructose, glucose, water, oil and special enzymes produced by bees. (Glucose and fructose are types of suger)

The first step in making honey begins when field bees fly from flower to flower collecting the sweet juices or nectar that a flower provides. With their tongues, the field bees suck out the nectar and store it in sacs within their bodies. After filling their sacs with these sweet juices, the field bees fly back to their bee hive and regurgitate the stored nectar into the mouths of house bees.

These house bees are assigned the job of adding enzymes from their bodies to the nectar. The enzymes cause the water in the nectar to evaporate-thereby turning the nectar into honey. Lastly, the nectar is stored in a cell of a honeycomb. Overtime, the nectar ripens and becomes honey.

The buzz on honey...

* Honey is one of the easiest foods to digest.

* Honey is used in many cough syrups because its smooth, thick texture soothes throats.

* As a result of honey's unique ability to readily absorb air, it is often used as a moistening agent in baking.

* Honey comes in all types of colors and flavors. The color and flavor of honey depends on the how old the honey is and the kind of flower that the nectar was extracted from.

The pollen filter is located behind the glove box.

You will need to remove a plastic cover to remove the element which If I remember rightly is in 2 parts.

I think you will have to get the 2 cartridge elements from a dealer as the last time I tried a motor factors they were not quite the right size and would not fit.

I have got a diagram but would need to send it to you as an attachment, so if you want it I will need your e:mail address.

Hand pollination (also called "mechanical pollination") is a technique used when natural, or open pollination is insufficient or undesirable. The most common techniques are for crops such as cucurbits, which may exhibit poor pollination by fruit abortion, fruit deformity or poor maturation. Hand pollination is only an option on a small scale, but is a common technique by gardeners who transfer pollen with an artist brush or cotton swab. Sometimes the corolla is removed from male flowers and the flower itself is brushed against the stigmas of female flowers.

Hand pollination can be the simple act of shaking, with tomatoes and other self fertile flowers. Tomatoes grown in greenhouses generally need aid in pollination, and this has been done by hand or with an electric vibrator for a long time. Recently it has been mostly supplanted by cultured bumblebees.

I'm allergic to pollen, should I continue jogging ?

I used to jog in the morning, but lately the pollen allergies are so bad, will jogging outside make it worse or maybe help my body getting used to pollen ?

I'm allergic to pollen, should I continue jogging ?
Tenno: Jogging is good exercise. Exercise is good for overall health and the immune system, so you should keep trying to job during the pollen season. Pollen counts are generally low on damp days and still days (little wind). They tend to be highest in the early morning and again in the evening. If this is the time of day you jog, then get one of those masks to wear while jogging. Make sure it won't restrict your airflow, but will keep the pollen out. As soon as you come inside shower and wash your hair right away! You will be full of pollen and you don't want to spread it all over your house. If you have pets, keep them inside during this time of year as much as possible. That is because they bring pollen in on their fur also. If you are in the US you can use the link I provided to get pollen forecasts for your area.

As for getting used to pollen, immunotherapy is where you exposure your body to small amounts of the offending allergen in hopes that you will reduce sensitivity. It works for a portion of the population, but for many it does not. Some people will tell you to take local honey every day. The problem with this is that bees frequent plants that have heavy, waxy yellow pollen so this is the pollen they use to make honey. The allergy causing pollens are all white, dry, and very light. Bees don't use this type of pollen to make honey, so these pollens don't end up in honey.
Reply:You could try taking some over the counter antihistamines. Some can make you sleepy though so look for some which say "no sedatives included" or something similar. If these dont help you're doctor can probably prescribe something stronger to help you.

I only know in regards to cat allergies, the person can become used to their own particular cat and not be allergic to it, but remain allergic to all other cats. I suppose there is too much pollen around for you to learn to tolerate.

What is the pollen tube nucleus and the generative nucleus? what are its functions?

Inside a pollen grain--

There are two nuclei

1 ) Tube nucleus or Pollen tube nucleus = It forms a pollen tube when a pollen germinates on the stigma . The pollen tube then passes through the style to reach the ovary and the ovule towards the female gamete / gametophyte / Ovum.

2 ) Generative nucleus == It forms TWO Male gametes or the sperms or the sperm nuclei by division.

Both of them travel through the pollen tube till they reach the Ovum .

One of them fuses with the female gamete to form diploid OOSPORE OR ZYGOTE (It form embryo or the future plant )

The remaining one fuses with diploid secondary nucleus to form the endosperm nucleus ( The Nourishing tissue for the germinating seed / embryo.

my doctor says no!

Is it possible to get ride of pollen and dust allergy?
I've heard of people using raw natural honey building from small doses to large as a way to treat this.
Reply:Unfortunately there is no cure, but there are ways to reduce allergy attacks. Pollen comes around maybe twice a year so we will have to deal with the yellow snow. Dust is around all year. If you dust often wearing a mask and get a humidifier it will help a lot. Using your allergy medicenes or taking your allergy shots will reduce allergy problems.
Reply:I have heard that eating local honey daily for a long period of time may make you adapt to your local pollen.

I am not sure if it works, but I am definitely going to try it out. It makes sense, given what honey is, but I don't know if the bees synthesize it too much to make it too different from its original state (and that which destroys those of us with allergies), or if taking enough of the pollen will cure us of it.

I have heard that it does though, like everything else in this world. Adaptation.
Reply:Have you went to an allergist, instead of an MD? Allergy desensitation shots will help tremendously and the benefits last indefinitely after you stop the shots. I had a series of allergy shots lasting nine years. It took two years for the shots to start working. It has been seven years since I discontinued the shots and I still have most of the benefits.
Reply:Sometimes an allergist can help. I had hay fever something awful as a kid. I took shots, and I believe it has helped somewhat. I don't know if I got shots for dust, too, but that still makes me sneeze like crazy. Try another doctor.

What to do with bee pollen?
I used to keep bees many years ago (1,000 colonies, hives) and I ate bee pollen by the table spoon plain without anything. I love the flavor. You can add it to anything you like as long as there is no heat added to what ever you are adding it too. No heat means nothing warm or hot. the heat destroys the natural properties of the pollen. Raw pollen should be consumed as it is, raw. The easiest way to eat it is to mix it with honey if you don't like it plain. Mix only what you will eat at one time. Use 1 Tbs. honey to 1 Tbs. pollen.
Reply:Bee Pollen is a SUPER food it can be used many ways. I use it in Smoothies( not too exciting.) add it to fruit Juice, I have heard of Warm Popcorn being tossed with it. I have always heard you shoudn't warm it too much.

What's the best over the counter allergy medicine for pollen?

Symptons: REALLY stuffy nose, sinus pain, headache, feesl like someone is squeezing my head

What's the best over the counter allergy medicine for pollen?
The best OTC medication is probably Claritin. They have several different kinds, and it doesn't make you drowsy like Benadryl. Claritin used to be a prescription medication, and a lot of times doctors will advise their patients to use it if they can't afford a prescription plan.
Reply:claritin
Reply:Claritin or alavert (loratadine) 10mg. Make sure you take the claritin D if you have sinus headache and pain. It is by request of the pharmacist as they keep it behind the counter. You will have to sign your life away and show ID for it, but it is worth it. (They want to make sure you arent making crack with it.) Oh! don't get the claritin D 24 only the 12 hour because the 24 can make you feel kind of shaky and wierd. Another good one is Advil cold and sinus also behind the counter but only lasts 6-8 hours. Good luck.

How do we obtain bee pollen and royal jelly from bees?

Beekeepers get royal jelly by tricking the bees into making 50 or more queens. This causes the bees to make a huge quantity of royal jelly that is added to the queen cells. The beekeeper then removes the larva and harvests the royal jelly.

The pollen is collected by adding a pollen trap which knocks the pollen off the bees as the enter the hive.

How do we obtain bee pollen and royal jelly from bees?
Royal jelly is a substance that bees produce. Female bees are diploid, resulting from fertilised eggs, and most of these become workers. in contrast, male bees are haploid, resulting from unfertilised eggs, and they become drones. However, of the female bees, at least one tends to be fed a substance called royal jelly, which is basically a substance that helps it grow into a queen bee. This substance is made by the other bees in the hive, I'm not sure how, but it is a naturally occurring substance somewhere in the hive.

I'm not sure what bee pollen is exactly, let alone how we extract it from bees.

What happens when you place a sugary solution on the pollen grains?

It's sexual reproduction in plants

What happens when you place a sugary solution on the pollen grains?
As long as the sugar concentration isn't too high, the pollen grains will germinate and form pollen tubes. The presence of the sugar solution simulates the reception of the pollen grain on the stigma of a flower.

What does the weather man mean by "The pollen count"?

do they actually count it, if so how do they do this?

What does the weather man mean by "The pollen count"?
Simply put, its the allergens in the air.

*Im not a meterologist* but I believe they take samples of the air and see how much pollen is in the sample to determine the avereage amount of pollens or allergens in the air. So to answer your question, I guess they are actually counting the pollens in the air samples.
Reply:they use a Tauber trap to catch pollen on a given area and count it!
Reply:They use a machine that measures Density in a given Sample. I dont know the name of this machine but it is similar to the Dreagers that are used to measure Chemical Contamination of Atmosphere by the Military

Dogwood trees have bloomed and the pollen makes the inside of my nose itch terribly. What can I do!?
I found that taking a combination of timed release vitamin C (500mg.) and pantothenic acid (500mg) every day eventually made my allergies better. I've been doing this for many years and now my allergies are gone! This combo also increases your body's immune system so I never get sick!
Reply:there is over the counter med and it is non drowsy type~ it is CLARITIN~ it used to be perscription only, but now u can get it at the store~ yes i agree benadryl makes me sleepy too~ this is strictly for allergies (the claratin) and is non drowsy~
Reply:go to a ear nose and throat doctor to get allergy tested (as long as you don't mind shots) I got 107 shots in like a hours time. After being tested I got one shot a week for two years and then one shot everyother week for a year. The shots slowly make you immune to allergies. Now I don't have to get any shots at all because I'm immune.
Reply:Go to a doctor and get a steroidal nasal spray, like Beconase AQ. It really works, but it takes 5 days to start working, so it is best to start on it before allergy season.

Does avoiding walking under trees when one has tree pollen allergies help limit exposure?

Looking for ways to not get so much on me and in my car. Also, anyone know the best way to keep it off my car as my eyes water when I drive.

Does avoiding walking under trees when one has tree pollen allergies help limit exposure?
Pollen is so fine it is readily carried by the slightest breeze. Not walking under the tree can decrease the amount of pollen you take in through aspiration, and also does not allow the gross amounts to infiltrate your clothing to the highest degree. but one, without using a breathing apparatus can not eliminate it all.

Parking in a garage, or using a car cover can protect contamination from direct contact with falling, or blown pollen.

When in your car under those circumstances it is wise to recirculate the air in the vehicle. that will Keep out most of the air-born pollen.

There is a nasal filter that fits completely in the nares and can be obtained at allergy clinics or allergy Dr.'s offices. One is called Nafil. -nasal filter. It has a clip with a small filter on both ends that is inserted into the nares of the nose. I have used them, and they are quite comfortable and inconspicuous.

Does anyone know how I can relieve dust and pollen allergy symptoms in pregnancy?

Antihistamines are not recommended

Does anyone know how I can relieve dust and pollen allergy symptoms in pregnancy?
You can use a drug-free formula for pregnancy. My wife became allergic to ragweed, all legumes, squashes and most nuts after our first was born. For relief and airborne relief, you can try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray).

Try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It draws out all the gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean). I've been doing it at work too.

The buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot. The special bottle and salt is about $20.

You can do this a often as you like with no bad side effects.

You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. So if you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis. (I put in a link for “what” and “how” – there’s also some good info on wiki)
Reply:Go to the doctor. When I was pregnant they put me on Clairtin(sp) and nose spray. You can have things to help, no need to suffer so you can enjoy your pregnancy.
Reply:A nasal rince really helps. No meds just sterile type its called neail med sinus rinse!
Reply:you can take benedryl but not everyday. clariton certain types are safe to take when pregnant. ask your doctor.
Reply:Boots do a homepathic brand i took them whilst breastfeeding, am not sure abotu pregnancy though. Talk to a dr or pharmacist
Reply:Call your doctor because there are allergy medicines that you are 100% allowed to take!!!!!!! Don't suffer its so not worth it!!
Reply:I have allergies to everything and I was told with both of my pregnancies that Claritin 10mg tablets were okay to take. They don't want you taking any kind of antihistamines and Clritin was te only thing that I was told was safe. Always double check with your doctor though.
Reply:Check with your doctor. Mine gave me a list of medications that I could take for my allergies which get really bad in spring with things starting to bloom!
Reply:You should talk to your doctor. I believe that the older generation of antihistamines (the ones that make you drowsy) are considered safe. So that might be an option, but get some advice.
Reply:yes got to say go to your docs or nurse at surgery an they will give you a list of safe medication that you are able to buy over the counter that are safe to take while you are pregnant.

How might the fact that there are so many pollen cells help pollination occur?

It's all about numbers. More pollen increases the probability that a pollen grain will reach the stigma of a flower and initiate fertilization.

How might the fact that there are so many pollen cells help pollination occur?
The more you've got the better your chance of fertilisation.
Reply:flowers undergo asexual reproduction mostly..only when there r a large number of pollen cells(the male part), atleast one or two of the pollen grains will reach the gynaecium(female)..hence a large number of pollen cells r found...

How good are bee pollen pills? Are they better than regular vitamin pills?

That's kind of a wierd question. Bee pollen is not a vitamin, so they're kinda not even the same thing. What is a "regular" vitamin pill anyway?

If you mean multi-vitamin, then I guess you're thinking of something with Vitamins A, Bs, C, D, E, and K, along with all the minerals you need, then no, bee pollen is not going to have all of that.

Bee pollen is very high in B-vitamins, probably higher than most multi-vitamins, and is usually considered to give you energy and help boost immune system, but if you're choosing to take one or the other, take the multi-vitamin. Bee pollen is not the first thing everyone should take, but maybe if you're taking 10-11 things already that are more important for your body, then you could add bee pollen to the mix.

Bee pollen is great, but not necessary. Anyone that makes a judgement that it's "better" than a vitamin is lying to you, since they're basically not the same thing.

It's kinda like asking if cats are better than dogs. Someone could say "yes" or "no" but they're both wrong, since anyone could argue it either way because they're too different to compare exactly.

Need to change the pollen filter in my car but don't know how ...?

I have a 2006 volvo s40 and need to change the pollen filter but don't know where it is located in the car. Where is it? I can do it myself. I just don't know where it is located in the car to get to it to change it. Help!

Need to change the pollen filter in my car but don't know how ...?
If your are talking about the "cabin" air filter, It is located behind your glove box. Most likely, you will need to find the screws that hold the door of your glove box on. Then once you have removed the door you can find the screws that hold in the glove box, remove the glove box. Behind that you will see a small box. It has the cabin air filter in it. The filter usually slides out like the CD tray on your computer, but sideways. :)
Reply:I would assume it is located within your air filter, or the hose going to it from your intake.

Tree Pollen in Cincinnati, I need allergy help?

I'm getting ramsacked by tree pollen right now in cincinnati ohio. I'm taking antihistamines which aren't working to well. The weird thing is that my allergies are only really terribly bad during the morning and night. Usually during the day I'm fine except for today which was a record high pollen count. Can anyone tell me why my allergies become worse during the night while trying to sleep, and can anyone recomend a good otc antihistamine that works well. Also eye drops, and stuffy nose reliever recomendations would help to. Thank you and I'm sorry if you're going through this too.

Tree Pollen in Cincinnati, I need allergy help?
I hope you know that pollens might cause crossreactions with certain foods eg. potato and carrot. So eating these foods might worsen your pollen symptoms. I suggest you find out more about these crossreactive foods (lots of information in the internet) and eliminate them for the pollen season.

Do you keep window open in the bedroom? If you do, that might explain your sleeping problems. Do you have asthma? If not, you might have mild undetected asthma which is activated by pollens. Pollens and pollutions do that to someones, not a rare thing at all. What kind of symptoms you have?
Reply:I have allergies to any allergy medicine might help depending on the severity.

Is pollen in the horses water bad for them? Is 2xweekly enough for cleaning?

The cleaner the water the better, but a little pollen in the water shouldn't hurt your horses. Horses are tougher than people give them credit for. They don't need perfect water all the time.

If you need some help keeping your water trough clean, put some fish in it. You can use those algae eaters (plecostamous) or goldfish (I prefer the plecos personally). They can have a hard time adjusting to the water so you'll have to buy like 10 or 12 of them and then maybe 2 or 3 will make it. And you have to take them out in the winter before the water gets too cold but it's kind of fun to have fish in the water trough.

Is pollen in the horses water bad for them? Is 2xweekly enough for cleaning?
Pollen is everywhere in the environment, especially this time of year. It's probably on your horse's hay and any grass they might be grazing on. Horses have been consuming pollen for millions of years with no ill effect. As for cleaning your water trough, if you want to clean it that often, that's great. If not, every two weeks is fine, too. Much depends on how dirty it gets and how often it NEEDS cleaning.
Reply:No, and yes, it's more than enough, especially right now. Pollen doesn't hurt horses- it just makes water look dirty. Our horses get pollen, hay, etc., in their water troughs all the time, and they are never bothered by it.
Reply:I like my guys to have clean water. I fill the tank 2/3 of the way and when it's almost empty I swish it around then dump and rinse.

If the sides of the tank are slippery when I slide my fingers across I will take a brush to it and a 'glug' of bleach...rinsing well after.

I keep my water tank under the run-in so it's out of the sun and blowing dust and the pollen.

Pollen won't hurt but sure does mess up a tank!
Reply:Pollen isn't hard on a horse, they're out in it every day...clean your tank as many times as it takes to keep it relatively clean..if that's three or four times a week due to either dust, hay droppings into the water or whatever then you'll need to do it.

What part of the lif cycle is represented by the mature pollen grain?

Does anyone know how to remove lilly pollen from clothes etc thanks?

Not really. I've tried lots of things, whatever u do don't rub it, just soak it first in liquid soap or powder then bung it in washing machine. Next time snip off the stamens to prevent it happening again, they can ruin everything! It's also poisonous to cats if they brush by it and the cats lick the pollen off their fur.

Does anyone know how to remove lilly pollen from clothes etc thanks?
Lily Pollen stains.

Gently dab a strip of cello tape onto the stain.

The pollen will stick to the tape.

Do not rub.

Or

Pollen Stains. If lily pollen (the golden or reddish “dust” on the anthers of each bloom) gets on your clothing, let it “dry,” then carefully brush it away with a dry, soft brush or facial tissue. Or gently dab pieces of adhesive tape on the fabric until the pollen is gone. Do not brush the pollen away with your hands (oils from your skin will set the stain), and do not use water or a wet cloth (this will spread and set the stain). If some pollen still remains, place the item in direct sunlight for a couple of hours; the stain should disappear. Pollen stains can often be removed from washable fabrics with an enzymatic detergent such as Era.

[Ed: Carefully remove the anthers from the flowers as they open. Pollen can be "stuck" to flowers (such as lilies, arum, calla, etc) by giving the flowers a quick spray with hair spray if the flower is to used for a short use, such as a wedding bouquet.]
Reply:i would try any cleanser that removes grass stains, they are probably close in their chemical makeup--i use oxy clean.
Reply:squirt hairspay on the stain as soon as poss. then wash

Have you ever seen a wildflower with shiny silver pollen things?

In Riverside Co. CA, I saw some flowers growing on a hill. They had shiny silver pollen things, like aluminum foil. The flowers were small. I don't remember what color the flower was or what the plant or leaf looked like, I just remember the silver pollen things. The plant was about 3 to 6 inches tall. I have looked in the "Rare and Endangered" plant lists on every web site I could find. I went back every spring but I haven't seen them since. People drive their trucks up that hill to show off. They killed the wildflower patch.

What are some holisitic treatments for allergies as pollen is really bad now?

I was skeptical about this one at first, but go to your local health food store and ask for unfiltered LOCAL honey. It will contain traces of the various allergens in your area. They also give the honey a nice taste. It will probably not happen over night, but your body may develop a tolerance to your local pollen because of this type of exposure.

This will not work for everyone but pharmacologists tell me that some of the best performing drugs are only 40% effective anyway--meaning that 60% of the people who take some of the best drugs, don't get any results.

So at worst, you get to enjoy the taste of some very flavorful honey in your tea or on an English muffin...awww...what torture. :)

What are some holisitic treatments for allergies as pollen is really bad now?
Local honey! If it is a local flower you are allergic to, and if it is edible, you can make a tea out of it. I recommend a book we use at our School. It has detailed info about stayin in balace with the seasons and allergies.

I don't have it infront of me right now, but its "staying heathy with the seasons" get the revised version. it's very interesting. It also give natural liver clense reciepes, and detox info.

How many microns in a speck of pollen?

"Pollen grains come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and surface markings characteristic of the species... ...Most, but certainly not all, are spherical. Pollen grains of pines, firs, and spruces are winged. The smallest pollen grain, that of the Forget-me-not (Myosotis spp.), is around 6 µm (0.006 mm) in diameter."

So the smallest is 6 microns.

What is the role of Pollen grain in plants?

pollen garins are where male gametes are found in flowering plants

if there are no male gametes there is no sexual reproduction in plants

What is the role of Pollen grain in plants?
Pollen grain is a fine to coarse powder consisting of microgametophytes (pollen grains), which produce the male gametes (sperm cells) of seed plants. Each pollen grain contains vegetative cells (only one in most flowering plants but several in other seed plants) and a generative cell containing a tube nucleus (that produces the pollen tube) and a generative nucleus (that divides to form the two sperm cells). The group of cells is surrounded by a cellulose cell wall and a thick, tough outer wall made of sporopollenin.

So, It acts as the Sperm and helps as a carrier of ecological information in plants

Some flowers reject pollen produced by the same plant. Why do plants do this?

Self-incompatibility - a mechanism in some angiosperms to reduce self-fertilization and increase outbreeding.

Some flowers reject pollen produced by the same plant. Why do plants do this?
Pretty much the same reason you don't marry your sister. It prevents inbreeding, allows more diversity of genetic material.

If pollen is taken by bees from poisonous plants such as hemlock or foxgloves, will the honey be poisonous?

Yes, although the toxin must be present in the nectar. Rhododendron and Kalmia nectars produce toxic honey, for instance, as do honey from many other members of the Ericaceae like Ledum. Coriaria and Aesculus are other plants with toxic nectars that can give rise to toxic honey.

If pollen is taken by bees from poisonous plants such as hemlock or foxgloves, will the honey be poisonous?
Bees make honey from the nectar extracted from a flower not its pollen. The way toxins in nectar influences a honeybee’s willingness to eat floral nectar has been investigated by a team led by Dr Geraldine Wright (Newcastle University).

Honeybees were found to be endowed with the ability of making a connection between almost any color, shape, texture or scent with food.

The new analysis on the honeybee genome has showed that honeybees have relatively few genes for taste receptors compared to other evolved insects of a similar size like those from the Diptera Order (which includes flies and mosquitoes).

That's why researchers have thought that perhaps honeybees had a decreased need to track down and learn about toxins, even if some floral nectar is toxic.

But the new research carried out by Wright's team points out that honeybees could have the ability to detect the toxins, even if they are not able to taste them.

The team discovered that both the carbohydrates level and the toxin presence in nectar influenced a honeybee’s memory for learned odors.

Honeybees learned not to react to odors linked with toxins within 20 min of ingesting toxins, and this behavior will be kept up to 24 hours after the first contact with a toxin.
Reply:No. Only certain parts of those plants are toxic. Think about it: if the nectar in their flowers were toxic, how would the bees be able to gather it , and incidentally, pollinate 'em, without dying?

Are pollen masks effective for preventing allergies leading to asthma?

My 4 yr old son has just been diagnosed with asthma. It was a nightmare to see him struggle for air that one time when he had a sever attack.

Now I am looking alternative ways to make his life as normal as possible since putting him in a BUBBLE is quite out of this world. I have been giving him a daily dose of 'claritin' to prevent pollen allergies (i will stop once pollen is low, it is quite high in houston, tx now). I have purchased air ionizers for each room in the house. I now vacuum once daily using my newly purchased 'walter filtration vacuum'. Seriously, a bubble would have been cheaper to purchase.

Since I cannot prevent him from going outside to play with his friends, I would like to know if pollen masks are effective. Has anyone tried it?

Allergen masks are good for temporary relief but its not good to wear them for hours at a stretch.Check with your child's doctor before experimenting with them.As hard as it seems you really do need to keep him out of the range of his allergens on days when the allergy index is high.Encourage your child to find fun and creative uses for his time indoors,tv should be limited and having crafts, hobbies, puzzles or other mental and learning activities should be encouraged this will help ease stress.Air filters are very important as well.As far as going out to play with his friends are concerned, why not have his friends over on particularly bad days ALLERGY WISE.Otherwise encourage your child to play outdoors later in the day when the allergy levels tend to dive down. And make sure your child stays inside when he is having a flair.

Cann pollen allergies make you tired?

Since the middle of March 2008 I believe my allergy to tree pollen has zapped my energy and made tired. Some days are better than others. My eyes are srating to get red and droopy and I feel like Want to close them all the time. Is this tiredness part of seasonal allergies?

Cann pollen allergies make you tired?
Can be. Pollen causes histamines to work over time. Any extra energy your body uses will affect your fatigue.
Reply:wow. i have been wondering the same thing. ive been so tired lately. i think it is the pollen. Does anyone know when the pollen will subside?
Reply:Yes and I am sorry. Not only do allergens wreak havoc in our bodily systems, it makes us exhausted. I have gone to taking a multi-vitamin, a B complex (50mg or 100mg), and B2 (50mg or 100mg). The B's are great NATURAL energy boosters.

Have you spoken to your doctor lately? There are several allergy medicines out there today that can help you fight this war. Pill forms come in (but not limited to) Allegra, Zyrtec (OTC), Claritin (OTC), and Singulair. There are nasal sprays and eye drops that can help.

Personally, I would suggest that you check at the local Food Coop for natural remedies. Check online too for ideas -- I just started with Bioallers Nasal Allergy Spray. I can not wait to see how, in the long run, it works out.
Reply:absolutely. being tired or fatigue is one of the less talked about and commercialized symptoms of allergies. try some Zyrtec (brand name or store brand-I've been using CVS's generic). I've been a fan of it since it was first introduced as a prescription back in the mid 90's. take one every night for a month or 2 or til everything stops blooming. you should feel better after the 3rd-4th day, once it really gets into your system.

Good Luck!

Are your allergies dreading the coming springtime weather and pollen?

Please keep the blossom away. It may look pretty, but it hates me.

I have this stupid allergy to just blossom. I break out just looking at the damn stuff. ¬¬

Are your allergies dreading the coming springtime weather and pollen?
Yes!! As it is, we just moved to an area where I have to take 2 Benedryl a day. I will probably be up to 4 a day soon!!
Reply:NO WAY bring them on after 6 months of winter and another one to go, it's no problem I'll deal with it, the cabin fever is driving me crazy. lol
Reply:Here in Florida, we are already a mess. The Oak pollens are out in force. There is a fine yellow powder all over everything each day. I can't wait to clean it out of the pool filter.

Does the fact that plants produced pollen early this year mean that they will finish earlier?

The pollen season and therefore the hayfever season started early this year. Does this mean that plants will stop producing pollen earlier or will they have an extended pollen season?

Does the fact that plants produced pollen early this year mean that they will finish earlier?
It is my understanding that the allergy season is going to be pretty bad this year. I also think it depends on where you live. I am in Northern California and it did not rain much this past season. Things bloomed early and as a result... allergies have been bad. The high counts earlier have been for trees, so just imagine, grass and other allergens are still to come into full stregnth. Here in CA because of the warm weather we are now experiencing rapid growth of grasses. If you allergic to those, you will still be suffering. As someone who suffers pretty much year round... this season has been brutal! I don't believe pollen production comes to a complete stop, it just slows down... and as long as the weather is warm... it will not slow down until it cools down. For relief, just make sure to have your allergy meds at hand. If you don't get enough relief from them, ask your Dr. to give you samples of others to try. 1 med doesn't fit all. If you are an asthmatic who suffers with the allergies, I have found advair to help with asthma symptoms. Flonase is also another good med if you don't mind squiting it into your nose (this one is for allergies). GOOD LUCK %26amp; RELIEF!

Could i be allergic to pollen?

Sometimes after i get up in the mornings i start sneezing my head off and then it stops and a while and i also have veins showing in my eyes all the time whatever the time of year when im not even tired. This also happens on mornings when it isn't warm or anything. Could this be a pollen allergy?

Could i be allergic to pollen?
Everyone is allergic to pollen. It just depends on how bad each person's allergy is. Some people it's just a mild nuisance (an itchy nose, scratchy throat) and others have terrible sneezing, coughing, sinus congestion, itching eyes, throat, etc.

There are so many different plants, trees and flowers that come out a different times of the year. I get allergies in the spring, but then I get ragweed allergies this time of year (ragweed comes out only this time of year). I bet you have a ragweed allergy. A lot of people are sneezing and stuffy right now.

Talk to your parents. Tell them about the sneezing and your red eyes. They can buy you an antihistamine at the drug store that will help you.
Reply:yes, and it sounds like it too....I have the same thing especially in the springtime....go to your doctor, they can give you some meds to help with it
Reply:If it happen the same time of year after year it is a pollen allergy. If you have it all the time it could be an allergy to something like dust mite dust. Dust mite dust accumulate around beds.
Reply:Possibly -- take an antihistamine and see if it clears up -- OR -- go see an allergist

Do you sleep with the windows open? If so, mornings are the worst for allergies; AC is recommended!!
Reply:this could be any type of allergy. dust, mold, pollen, animal hair, etc. the only way to be sure is to get an allergy test from your doctor.
Reply:yea me too
Reply:umm yea prby thats what happens to me and im allergic to pollen not bad though!!

good luck!!

How does pollen get from the anther to the ovary?

Specifically, from anther to stigma. This is called pollination.

Commonly by wind, insects, spiders, birds.

How does pollen get from the anther to the ovary?
by wind or bees and butterflies

Where and when does pollen exist?

Pollen is in the air, is that correct?

Where and when does pollen exist?
To quote Wikipedia, "Generally pollens that cause allergies are those of anemophilous plants (pollen is dispersed by air currents.) Such plants produce large quantities of lightweight pollen (because wind dispersal is random and the likelihood of one pollen grain landing on another flower is small) which can be carried for great distances and are easily inhaled, bringing it into contact with the sensitive nasal passages.

In the US, people often mistakenly blame the conspicuous goldenrod flower for allergies. Since this plant is entomophilous (its pollen is dispersed by animals), its heavy, sticky pollen does not become independently airborne."

Pollen that causes allergies are generally grasses, weeds, trees not flowers. That does not mean you can not be allergic to flowers but chances are it is not the pollen of the flower. Pollen is produced at different times of the year depending on what the pollen is and where you are located.
Reply:pollen is from flowers. and flowers grow in the spring time, which is why that is when allergies are the worst! pollen helps flowers grow and i guess when the wind blows, it gets into the air
Reply:Yes, polen is in the air. Polen are reproductive spores that float through the air %26amp;/or are carried by insects %26amp; animals. Pollen does not just come from flowers. Many plants use pollen to reproduce %26amp; it happens throughout the year. I'm sensitive to a particular tree pollen here in Denver so my allergies tend to act up in late winter/very early spring. However, during wet summers my allergies can act up all summer long. So it's not just WHEN but WHAT TYPE of pollen you are allergic too.

What is the function of the sticky hairs on pollen grain?

give one function of the sticky hairs on the surface of the pollen grain.

What is the function of the sticky hairs on pollen grain?
one function is for pollination. It sticks to the insects that lands on the carpel of the plant that contains the ovule to be able to reproduce.
Reply:That's your assignment, but what is your question? Are you saying that not a single logical source for this type of explicit botanical information contains the answer to this homework assignment? Or is it actually that you just don't feel like trying to find it yourself?
Reply:They catch and anchor pollen grains.

How do i get orchid pollen off my top?

You can start by using cellophane (scotch) tape to try to lift the pollen off your top. Just press the tape into the stain and lift it back off. If your top is silk or another delicate fabric you should test a hidden area to make sure it doesn't hurt the fabric.

After getting all the pollen you can with the tape you can try a stain remover intended for the type of fabric you're trying to clean and then wash your top according to the manufacturer's instructions.

How do i get orchid pollen off my top?
use the new hoover orchid pollen vac, I have one and I would highly recommend it.

Many more pollen grains are produced compared to ovules. Why do plants do this?

To insure pollination occurs. Same reason that sperm is produced in much higher quantities than eggs. Its just to increase the chances of pollination.

Help the pollen is making me sick real sick what do i do ?

i am broke and so are my parents i can't afford even over the counter allergy meds my stomach i hurting alot and my head is really stuffy and i'm coughing a bit if i'm not carefull i'll lose my voice any at home trick that can help me?

Help the pollen is making me sick real sick what do i do ?
Call your Dr. and ask for samples or go to the nearest (free) health center. They will GIVE you some medicine. I'm assuming you live in the SOUTH, WHERE THE POLLEN IS HELL HERE. If it rains you'll be able to tell a HUGE difference. Wash your hair and pillow cases daily so you don't breathe pollen while you sleep. Good luck. (Steamy showers work wonders too! Keep house and linens clean til it rains.) good luck!
Reply:You can use a saline (salt) solution to put up you nose. You can also fill a big bowl with boiling water and put your face over it and put a towel over you and the bowl - steam really helps congestion and breathing problems

If your family can scrape up about $10 you can get Flomax allergy nasal spray in the drug store - the stuff is fantastic for nasal congestion.

If allergic to the pollen of olive trees are you allergic to olives?

good ?, the same would hold true for honey if one is allergic to bees, its all inthere, i'd say yes... if i'm wrong i'd rather error on the side of caution... you can take a skin test at the doctors office, it does not hurt, they simply draw circles on your arm and apply a very very small amount of different stuff, egg, milk, ect, and then see the reaction which can come immediately or upto an hour, they have medicine right there to stop the itchy spot... another is that they take a blood /urine sample and test that. get one or the other.. but get tested

If allergic to the pollen of olive trees are you allergic to olives?
I'm guessing no, Because that the olive is a completely different story from the pollen. Pollen is only used to produce the olive, so that's my statement. Then again, what if the pollen is inside? That would make you sneeze of have an allergic reaction. But that doesn't mean you are definently allergic to olives. That is from other ingredients that your body can't handle. Bye!

Is the interaction of pollen-producing flowers and pollinating organisms an ex of commensalism or mutualism?

It's free love baby. Free love. It gives me apples. And blackberries. And raspberries. When we share our love like this, it's mutualism.

Can you please tell me how i get lilly pollen stains out of my leather suite?

Leather specialist at a pro cleaner. Lilly pollen is tough. My Bichon Frise walked under some and it stained his hair. Wouldn't wash out, had to wait it out and cut it off when his hair grew out. It did fade a bit though, to an orangy rusty color. Ugh.

Can you please tell me how i get lilly pollen stains out of my leather suite?
sorry,it doesnt come out! Its the worst stain in the world.
Reply:Watching your answers with interest as my cat has lilly pollen stains on her face and ears.
Reply:nxt time pull the orange bud things offas soon as they open then u wont get stained
Reply:Specialist job for that.
Reply:I'm sorry, but I don't think they come out. I've had lilly pollen stains before and they never came out but the material wasn't leather. Check with a dry cleaner.
Reply:Lemon washing up liquid, it works on most things
Reply:Saddle soap works best to clean all types of leather.

Do cycling masks really prevent inhalation of pollen while cycling?

I was cycling today using my new mask and instead of the usual sticky antihistamine there is this runny stuff coming. Is it just antihistamine at a higher temperature or adrenalin?

Do cycling masks really prevent inhalation of pollen while cycling?
it doesnt fully block the pollen, but it helps.

if your nose is running, this sometimes happens when you breathe in what you've just breathed out.

response: i dont think its the carbon dioxide... i was thinking more the moisture.
Reply:no it will not.but it will stop a lot of it.if you get then and use one take a look on the inside .it will full black dirt from the cars.but its better to stop some .then to inhale it all.

What is a possible advantage of releasing pollen before the leaves expand?

Plants have various mechanisms that prevent self-fertilization.

Some flowers self-fertilize or “self,” but most angiosperms have mechanisms that make this difficult or impossible.

The various barriers that prevent self-fertilization contribute to genetic variety by ensuring that sperm and eggs come from different parents.

Dioecious plants cannot self-fertilize because they are unisexual.

In plants with bisexual flowers, a variety of mechanisms may prevent self-fertilization.

For example, in some species stamens and carpels mature at different times.

Alternatively, they may be arranged in such a way that it is mechanically unlikely that an animal pollinator could transfer pollen from the anthers to the stigma of the same flower.

The most common anti-selfing mechanism is self-incompatibility, the ability of a plant to reject its own pollen and that of closely related individuals.

If a pollen grain from an anther happens to land on a stigma of a flower on the same plant, a biochemical block prevents the pollen from completing its development and fertilizing an egg.

The self-incompatibility systems in plant are analogous to the immune response of animals.

Both are based on the ability of organisms to distinguish “self” from “nonself.”

The key difference is that the animal immune system rejects nonself, but self-incompatibility in plants is a rejection of self.

Because the pollen grain is haploid, it will be recognized as “self” if its one S-allele matches either of the two S-alleles of the diploid stigma.

Although self-incompatibility genes are all referred to as S-loci, such genes have evolved independently in various plant families.

As a consequence, self-recognition blocks pollen tube growth by different molecular mechanisms.

In some cases, the block occurs in the pollen grain itself, called gametophytic self-incompatibility.

In some species, self-recognition leads to enzymatic destruction of RNA within the rudimentary pollen tube.

Eventually, it may be possible to impose self-incompatibility on species that are normally self-compatible.

expanding the leaves is also one of the type

hope this helps u to understrand the phenomenon

What is a possible advantage of releasing pollen before the leaves expand?
If the pollen is carried by the wind, then the leaves would not interfere with the pollen reaching the female flowers.
